This is Bill Griffith, an all-around good guy. I never actually met him, though I’d seen him many times, and admired him from afar. He was a fixture in the paddling community here, a canoeist for, like, forever. In his retirement years from the California Dept of Fish and Game, he served on the board of the American River Parkway – nearly as long as the Parkway has been the jewel of the Sacramento region. He’s paddled in 38 of the 39 Eppie’s Great Races, which bills itself as the first triathlon. He taught Canoe classes for the American Red Cross and California Canoe & Kayak. He paddled the American river nearly every day, taking detailed notes on river otters, turtles, birds and anything else that fit his detailed notebook.

I’m guessing Bill was 81 at the time of his death two days after Christmas… he paddled in the morning, came home, took a nap… and stayed that way.

I took this photo of him in 2010.
